Recurrent Cancer When a metastasis occurs in the lung many months after treatment has been completed and no other disease exists, surgery with or without chemotherapy or radiation therapy can be curative. When new metastases develop soon after initial treatment begins, however, the outlook for cure is markedly reduced.
